Omaha Hi/Lo Split (or Omaha 8 or better) is certainly a game that is growing from strength to strength. Unlike Holdem, which is a game that works through its simplicity, Omaha Hi/Lo is a game that has been embraced for its relative complexity.
Basically the game is a split pot game meaning that half the pot goes to the high hand and half the pot goes to the lowest hand. The game is played like normal Omaha where every player is dealt 4 cards (hole cards) and you have a flop, turn and river giving you five communal cards. There are 4 betting rounds just like in Holdem poker. One of the major differences between Holdem and Omaha is that you must use two (BUT only 2) of the 4 cards dealt to you. It’s not like Holdem where you can use any of the seven cards available.
Now to make a low hand you need to have 5 individual or unique (meaning that they can’t pair up) cards under 8. The Ace is lowest card and the nuts (or the best hand) is A,2,3,4,5. Even though this is a straight it is considered the lowest possible hand in this form of poker and is referred to as ‘the wheel’. Remember again you must use 2 of your 4 hole cards and 3 of the 5 communal cards. So for anyone to make a low hand 3 of the 5 communal cards need to be unique and under 8. So if there is no low hand then the high hand will scoop the pot.
The other thing to remember is that you can win both the high and low hand if you have the right cards. You can make both a high hand and low hand out of your 4 cards which means you can use any 2 of your 4 to make your high, and any 2 of your 4 to make your low.
All this sounds a little confusing but just remember two things. You need better hands to win in all forms of Omaha than you do in Holdem and you MUST use 2 of your hole cards and 3 communal cards to make your hand. The last thing is polish up your skills at 888Poker before you go spending too much money on this game as it is a little tricky to learn but great fun (and very profitable) when you do.
