Pot Limit

When we think of Pot Limit these days it is mostly associated with Pot Limit Omaha. Pot Limit Hold’em used to be a very popular game but with the poker revolution in recent years the game has evolved into No Limit. No Limit is certainly a faster version of the game but in many ways it has taken some of the nuisances out of the older version that is Pot Limit. Pot Limit often allows players to see the pot cheaper and it is harder (especially on a re-raise) to push players out of the pot.

Unless players are competing in incredibly deep stacked tournaments then Limit and Pot Limit are quite similar later in the hand at the turn or the river. Yet there is no doubt that Pot Limit is friendlier to players that liked to limp into pots and play flops. Pot Limit tournaments are still played and it is clearly evident how much influence it has had on the game. It is a lot harder for shorter stacks to shove all in pre flop in a hope of picking up the blinds. You find that the larger stacks get plenty of value by calling a pot sized bet in the hope of picking up a good flop and returning the pressure on the smaller stack who may have missed the flop entirely.

Pot Limit is certainly not ‘better’ than No Limit; they are just different styles of games and both are enjoyable. Pot Limit is again something that new poker players want to experience because it teaches a set of skills that can be used in any form of poker. In any case those of you that want to learn Omaha should familiarise yourself with this style of poker. So if you’ve learned only No Limit so far, why not change up your game and have a go at Pot Limit.
